Looking at the Europe Language Jobs website, you’ll see that despite the economic crisis, there is a number of vacancies in Portugal, largely in customer service with companies such as Teleperformance & Sitel but you can also find some in finance or in I.T in places such as Braga, something we spoke about in a previous article about the best places to live in Europe.
Why Work in Portugal
The economic crisis means that if you’re working in Portugal, you are very unlikely to make the big bucks - this is supported by the fact that the minimum wage is 530 euros a month. The benefits to living and working in Portugal are that the country offers you something very different from somewhere such as the UK.
So, why move to Portugal?
Lifestyle. Simple as that.
Weather, food, work schedule, sitting out on a terrace having something nice to eat, and enjoying the sunshine at lunch or after work. Sounds pretty good, right?
Unlike places further North such as the UK or throughout Scandinavia, this scene is available to you for most of the year due to the delightful Mediterranean weather in Portugal. It’s quite different from the rushed lunch in a cafe in the rain.
Working in Portugal
As I said earlier, most of the vacancies in Portugal at ELJ are in the customer service industry and while this isn’t exactly the £30k a year graduate scheme role in marketing or psychology you were thinking of, there are massive opportunities for you.
Unemployment in Portugal is around 6.9% (January 2024) and this is higher for recent grads, but it's not all doom and gloom, some industries in Portugal have a shortage of skilled workers.
The shortage of skilled workers is found mainly in 3 sectors:
1. IT
2. Customer service
3. Tourism

Jobs in Portugal for English Speakers
Speaking Portuguese will give you a huge advantage in your job search, but it IS possible to find English-speaking jobs in Portugal. Right now, there is a large demand for German and Nordic language speakers, but English seems to be the one that never goes out of fashion. With a steady demand for English speakers, you will find yourself in a great position should you to choose to move abroad.
